NAHUM 1
The book of Jonah is both popular and interesting. It gives an account of a runaway prophet, a terrible storm at sea, the great fish that swallowed the prophet, God sparing the prophet’s life, the repentance of a wicked city and God’s mercy.
But Jonah’s sequel – the book of Nahum is not so popular. Nahum ministered in Nineveh just as Jonah did, but about one hundred years later. By that time, the Ninevites had no interest in repentance as they did years back. Because of this, Nahum condemned Nineveh and proclaimed judgment on the people.
We see from the stories of Jonah and Nahum that with every new generation comes the need for individuals to respond to God. No one’s spiritual life can be handed over to another; everyone must choose to serve the Lord from their own heart. God’s message is as fresh today as it was hundreds and thousands of years ago: judgment for the unrepentant but mercy for the repentant. How are we responding to that message?
God’s judgment is certain, but so is His mercy.
* Your mercy, Lord, is great to overrule our sins! Help us know Your righteousness and choose to walk in Your ways, in Jesus’ Name we pray. Amen.
