TRUE FRIEND

JOHN 15:9-17

I created my Facebook account about 11 years ago. I had accepted (and declined) many friend requests at the time, but still had many more requests waiting for my acceptance or rejection. Every now and then I go online and delete a lot. Why? Because I was not friends with any of them.

I love the fact that social media allows us to stay in touch with the people we care about no matter where we live or what time zone we are in. But I do not like false connections that sometimes arise.

Social networking sites allow friends to access personal information about each other. They may never see face to face or even exchange greetings online. In our world of ephemeral cyber-knowledge, we are beginning to realize that having a true friend means more than ever before.

When Jesus referred to His disciples as “friends” (John 15:15), He spoke of a special relationship that involved mutual commitment. He would soon lay down His life (v. 13) and ask them to show their friendship by keeping His commandments (v. 14).

In a true friendship, the loyalty of one in times of discouragement or fear can support that of the other. This is what Jesus is to us – our ever faithful friend, forever.

The dearest friend on earth is only a mirage compared to Jesus.

🙏Lord Jesus, thank You for being my friend. May our friendship bring You glory as You strengthen me for the Kingdom work to which You have called me. Amen.
