PSALM 139:13-24
A man described how his mother would ask him to clean up his room when he was younger. He would walk to his room as required to begin the exercise, only to become distracted while reading the comic book he was supposed to stack neatly. His mother would then abruptly end the distraction by telling him that she would be up in five minutes to look around the room. He would proceed to make the bed, hide everything he did not know what to do with in the closet because he could not effectively clean the room in that amount of time, and wait for her to walk in, hoping she would not check in the closet.
This makes me think about how many of us live our lives. We tidy up the outside of our lives in the hopes that no one will look inside the “closet” where we have hidden our misdeeds by making justifications and excuses, as well as assigning blame to others for our own failings.
The issue is that, despite being attractive on the outside, we are always aware of the chaos inside. The psalmist exhorts us to submit to God’s purifying examination. Let us ask Him to examine and purify every area of our lives.
🙏 Lord, pardon us for appearing attractive on the outside while trying to cover up our flaws and failings. We pray that You will purify our lives so that we can follow You with complete integrity.
