1 JOHN 1:5–2:2
In treating his patients, a doctor toiled incessantly for perfection. After attending to a woman in the emergency room, he decided to discharge her. “Do you remember that patient you sent home earlier today?” a nurse questioned him later that day. “Well, she is back now.” Following a hospital readmission, the patient passed away. The doctor was devastated. He saw the apparent truth: perfection is unattainable.
Christians sometimes have inflated notions of their own perfection. Our ideas and motivations are never entirely pure, even if we manage to appear to live faultless lives.
What if believers in Christ were identified for loving one another with the truth and the grace of God rather than for hiding their sins? What if we engaged in risky but helpful honesty with one another and the outside world?
When we are open with God about our sin, we are forgiven.
🙏🏻 Lord, empower us by Your Spirit to live courageously in love and honesty.
