MARK 1:35-39
Meg Hutchison, an American songwriter once sought 45 minutes of silence. She believes it is what we are missing most in society.
Silence provides opportunities for self-reflection and daydreaming, which activates several parts of the brain, gives us time to reduce internal noise and to strengthen awareness of what matters most.
Silence is really hard to find. There seems to be no getting away from noise. But the kind of noise that threatens our spiritual well-being is not the noise we cannot escape but the noise we invite into our lives. Some of us use noise to exclude loneliness: the voices of characters on television and radio give us the illusion of companionship. Some of us use it to calm our own thoughts: other voices and opinions prevent us from thinking for ourselves. Unfortunately, some use noise to prevent themselves from hearing what God has to say.
But Jesus, even when He was very busy, looked for lonely places where He could converse with God (Mark 1:35). Even if we cannot find a place that is perfectly calm, we must find a place to calm our souls (Psalm 131:2), a place where God has our full attention.
🙏 Lord, may the noise of the world not prevent us from hearing Your voice. Help us to be silent and to seek silence.
