THE RIGHT FOUNDATION

MATTHEW 7:24–29

The builder, who was renovating the old house John had inherited, said, “I have bad news for you.” “We discovered that the walls had basically no foundation when we started to renovate the back side of the garage for your office. They will need to be destroyed so that we can lay proper foundations and start over.”

“Does that have to be done?” John begged while thinking aloud about the added expenses. “Why not just fix it?” The builder, though, was adamant. “The building inspector will not accept it unless we descend to the correct depth. A solid foundation is essential.”

The difference between something that endures and something that is only temporary is the foundation. In spite of being invisible, foundations are crucial to a house’s strength and stability (Matthew 7:24–25), especially when it is being battered by the elements. Jesus knew this. He was also aware of His listeners’ hearts. To achieve their goals, they would be tempted to take the simple route, look for excuses, or cut corners.

There might be speedier and simpler foundations. It takes commitment to lay the proper groundwork for our lives, but the only solid ground worth building on is God’s truth. Houses built on Him and held together by Him stand firm in the face of life’s storms.

🙏Father, life’s storms can come with strong, dangerous winds. As we face our storms, please help us to trust in Your strength.
