JOSHUA 5:13–6:2
Even though an army officer may have a general strategy, he must receive and pass on fresh orders before every battle. The Israelite commander Joshua had to learn this lesson the hard way. He was chosen by God to lead Israel into the land that He had given them.
The city of Jericho was the first hurdle they encountered. Joshua asked the “commander of the Lord’s army” what message He had for His servant before the battle (Joshua 5:14). Joshua obeyed the Lord’s instructions and, as a result, won at Jericho.
Joshua and his people did not ask the Lord another time, nevertheless (9:14). They were duped into signing a peace agreement with Gibeon’s inhabitants, who were deceptive. The Lord was not pleased by this (vv. 3–26).
As we handle the difficulties of life, we too are reliant on the Lord. He yearns for our humble approach to Him right now. And tomorrow, He will be there for us once again.
