THE GENEROUS STRANGER

1 TIMOTHY 6:18-19

The old man navigated the narrow bus aisle with his suitcase. He was on his way to town and that was the only bus available for that day. His challenge was that he was tall and the only seats left were not spacious enough to accommodate him and his luggage. Shortly after settling into his uncomfortable position at the back of the bus, the conductor approached him, saying a passenger already occupying a very comfortable seat wanted to switch seats with him. With gratitude showing all over him, he made his way back up the aisle to the more spacious spot, while the benevolent stranger made his way toward his.

This stranger embodied the kind of generosity Paul encourages in his letter to Timothy. Paul told Timothy to instruct those in his care with the command to “be rich in good works…” (1 Timothy 6:18)

Whether we find ourselves with plenty or in want, we all can experience the richness of living generously by being willing to give or share what we have with others. When we do, we are bound to experience life that is truly life.

With whom can we share generously today? We do not need to go too far to discover.
