THE GARBAGE MAN’S HOUSE

2 CORINTHIANS 4:7

Jose Alberto Gutierrez, who lives in Bogota-Colombia built a massive free library in his house by rescuing books from trash bins.

While emptying the bins of Colombia’s capital, Jose Alberto Gutierrez one day found a copy of the classic novel Anna Karenina and kept it. For twenty years, the garbage man continued to collect Bogota’s discarded books, amassing up to 25,000 in a free library, swelled by donations.

Local children crowd into the house during weekend “library hours.” Prowling through every room, each packed with books, the children recognize the humble home as more than Jose’s house – for them it is a priceless treasury.

The same is true for every Christian. We are made of clay – fragile and can easily be broken. But we have become a home for God’s empowering Spirit, who enables us to carry the good news of Christ into a hurting, broken world.

Paul told the Corinthians, “But we have this treasure in earthen vessels, that the excellency of the power may be of God, and not of us.” (2 Corinthians 4:7)

Some may have been tempted to start preaching about themselves as seen in 2 Corinthians 4:5. Instead, Paul said, tell others about the priceless One living inside of us. It is Him and His power that turns our ordinary lives into a priceless treasury.
