THE COMPASS

JEREMIAH 29:4-14

On every journey we need a compass to make sure we are going in the right direction. When natural landmarks like stars and planets are obscure, we depend on a device which was probably first invented by the Chinese.

The compass is a device that indicates direction for navigation and geographic orientation. It usually consists of a magnetized needle or other object, such as a compass map or a compass rose, that can rotate to align with magnetic north.

From our text, words that seem so heartwarming were spoken at a time of the greatest pain and confusion for Judah. Exiled to Babylon, defeated, humiliated and seemingly abandoned by God. Prosperity, hope and the future seemed anything but secure. Yet, God was giving them hope for the future.

We are also in exile. We look forward to the return of Jesus and the restoration of the kingdom. Our compass is the Holy Spirit and He will always lead us back to Jesus. For this to happen, we need discernment, care, and guidance of the Spirit to avoid the rocks that can destroy our lives. And if we ever find ourselves stranded on a desert, that same Holy Spirit will save those of us who seek help and submit to His direction.
