1 JOHN 1:8–2:2
In 1962, Clarence Earl Gideon, from a Florida prison cell, petitioned the US Supreme Court to review his conviction for a crime he claimed he didn’t commit, citing that he did not have the means to hire a lawyer.
One year later, in the historic case of Gideon v. Wainright, the Supreme Court ruled that individuals unable to afford their own defence should receive a public defender from the state, leading to Clarence Gideon’s retrial and acquittal.
We are all guilty, but Jesus offers to be our Advocate to defend and care for our souls at God’s expense. Jesus provides freedom of heart and mind. He represents us all, responding to every request for mercy, forgiveness, and comfort, regardless of our actions or repercussions.
Jesus, our Advocate, can transform a prison of lost hope, fear, or regret into a place of His presence.
🙏 Kindly teach us, Father in heaven, about what it means to live free in Your love and presence. May we be able to enjoy this freedom even in places that we have previously only perceived as our prisons!
