The Chicago river flows backwards. Why? We are told that pollutants such as raw sewage were being dumped into the river, which had become the main source of drinking water in the city. As the city’s population continued to grow, because of noticeably health issues, authorities decided to permanently reverse the river’s flow, sending the contaminated water to the Mississippi River.
The Kingdom of Heaven (Kingdom of God) is clearly an upside-down kingdom, as opposed to secular thinking and system of government. You have to lose to win. You have to die to live.
When we look at Jesus’ earthly life, it may seem to be the exact opposite of what we expect. Despite being the King of Glory, He came to earth as a helpless baby. The claim of blasphemy was leveled against Him as an incarnation of God. He was crucified as a criminal, but He was the only blameless man.
It may seem strange to be dressed in the attitude and behaviour of Jesus as a disciple of Christ. Blessing the enemy (Romans 12:14), choosing holiness over wealth (1 Timothy 6:6-9), and finding joy in adversity (James 1:2) seems incompatible with worldly understanding.
Do not worry if you have to live your life in the reverse pattern from time to time. God will give you the power you need to honour Him and help you move forward.
