PROVERBS 8:12-21
During a Sunday service, I was distracted and annoyed by a person sitting beside me who sang off key and was out of pace during the unison readings. However, as we bowed our heads in prayer, it occurred to me that the Lord must definitely be more pleased with that other person’s heart than with the judgemental feelings He detected in mine.
I happened to read Proverbs 8 a few days later and was struck by verse 13: “The fear of the Lord is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate.” Throughout this chapter, wisdom encourages us to develop a wise heart, find life, and gain favour from the Lord. The alternative is to approach life with a superior attitude while dying on the inside.
Pride is a weapon that injures both the one who uses it and those who are attacked with it. Arrogance deprives us of everything God desires for us, whereas humility and fear of the Lord are riches, honour, and life.
🙏🏼 Oh, for a tiny bit of Thy meekness, our Saviour, to be the least when we should be puffed up with pride.
