OUTSIDE IN THE COLD

JOB 11:7–20; JOB 12:13

A woman called the housing assistance centre in desperation after her rental home was turned into a freezer with furniture due to a heating problem. She asked how she would care for her children, and the centre’s response was to move into a hotel and send the landlord the bill. The woman angrily hung up, feeling left out in the cold and wanting someone to understand her fear and desperation.

After losing everything, Job was advised by friends. Zophar suggested living for God, which he believed would brighten life. However, Job sarcastically rejected this advice, recognising the dissatisfying nature of textbook solutions to real-world problems.

Critics often criticise Job’s friends for their lack of understanding, but it is important to remember that people want answers, but they also want to know we are attentive, understanding, and care about their concerns.

People want to know that we care before they are interested in what we have to say.
