NOT AS MUCH AS YESTERDAY

DEUTERONOMY 8:3

A child was given a new T-shirt for his birthday. He put it on and proudly wore it all day. The next morning he was still wearing the same T-shirt, and his dad asked him, “Son, does that shirt make you happy?” He replied, “Not as much as yesterday.”

That is the problem with material things – they cannot give us the deep, lasting happiness we earnestly desire. We may have many possessions and still be disconsolate.

The world offers happiness through material accumulation – new clothes, a new car, new phone, an update to our phone or computer, etc. But no material acquisition can make us as happy as it did yesterday. That is because we were made for God and nothing less will satisfy us fully.

Our text today was quoted by Jesus Christ when Satan came to tempt Him with material things (Matthew 4:4).

Jesus did not mean that we do not need bread or material things. He was rather stating a fact: we are spiritual beings and we cannot exist on material things alone.

True satisfaction is found in God and His word.
