PSALM 19
Perhaps you are conversant with the famous saying, “Great minds discuss ideas; average minds discuss events; small minds discuss people.” Some individuals disagree with this statement, which is widely credited to social activist and former United States First Lady Eleanor Roosevelt. This statement, on the other hand, emphasises our terrible experiences. We are constantly faced with people’s lives at a level of closeness that can be inappropriate in a world of ever-present media – social and professional.
Unfortunately, this flood of personal information about others could lead to a culture of gossip – and not only about the wealthy and famous. Sharp tongues could be directed at people in our workplaces, churches, neighbourhoods, and families, and they can suffer the consequences of conversations that should not have taken place.
How can we overcome our natural desire to hurt people with our words? By acknowledging that God is the ultimate Hearer of our words. We can pray with the psalmist that the words that come out of our mouths and the meditations that come from our hearts remain acceptable in His sight (Ps. 19:14). We honour God when we try to please Him with our conversations about others. We can glorify Him by being careful in what we say.
Biting our tongues is preferable to making biting comments.
🙏🏼Forgive us, Father, for the times our speeches crosses the line of that which is appropriate. Help us to understand the power of words,
and give us the wisdom to use them well.
