JOHN 13:34
On Maundy Thursday, British royals traditionally distribute maundy money. Even though they are legal tenders, maundy coins are typically kept as priceless presents by recipients.
During the early years of her reign, Queen Elizabeth II determined that gifts should be given to locals at different cathedrals or abbeys rather than merely the people of London.
At York Minster in 2023, King Charles attended his first Maundy Service as a monarch. With Maundy Money, the King thanked 74 men and 74 women (representing his age that year) for their exceptional Christian service and for improving the lives of those in their local communities.
Jesus came to serve. He washed His friends’ feet and set an example for them to follow. He also laid down His life, dying on the cross, out of mercy and love, to give Himself for us to enjoy the fullness of life.
The tradition of the British royal family serving people in need continues as a symbol of following Jesus’ great example. By placing faith in Jesus, we become members of His family and can show love by living out His new command. As we depend on God’s Spirit to change us, we can reach out to others with care, affirmation, and grace.
🙏Lord, help us to serve and not wait to be served.
