JOHN 12:1-8
Before the crucifixion of Jesus, a woman named Mary poured a bottle of expensive perfume on His feet, then wiped His feet with her hair. In first-century Middle Eastern culture, decent women never let their hair down in public – it was dishonourable to do so. But true worship is not about what others think about us (2 Samuel 6: 21-22). To worship Jesus, Mary was ready to be dishonoured.
Some of us may feel pressured to be perfect when we go to church so that people will respect us. Figuratively speaking, we work hard to make sure all of our hair is in place. But a healthy church is a place where we can get carried away, lower our hair, and not hide our flaws behind a facade of perfection. In the Church, we should be able to reveal our weaknesses in order to find strength, rather than hiding our faults in order to appear strong.
Worship does not mean to act as if nothing has gone wrong; it is making sure that what is wrong is made right – right with God and with each other. If our biggest fear is letting our hair down, maybe our biggest sin is keeping it.
🙏Lord, make us honest worshippers; those who worship in spirit and truth.
