LOVE FOR ENEMIES

JONAH 3:10–4:11; LUKE 6:32

In 1950, South Korean 15-year-old Kim Chin-Kyung joined the army to defend his homeland but found he was not ready for combat. As friends died, he begged God for his life and promised to love his enemies.

Dr. Kim, many years later, gained friends through caring for orphans and educating North Korean and Chinese youth. He referred to himself as a loveist, expressing his faith in Jesus.

Jonah, who was saved from the belly of a large fish, remained unchangeable and preferred to die rather than witness God’s mercy to his enemies, despite eventually obeying God.

We must decide whether to follow Jonah’s attitude towards those we fear and hate or seek God’s mercy and love for our enemies.

🙏Dear God, we have a tendency to love people who love us back. Despite our self-centeredness, You still love us. May we have the grace to become more like Jesus than like Jonah.
