LABOURING FOR FOOD

JOHN 6:22-34

Danielle was getting ready for work, and her daughter, who was 4 years old, was busy too. She was fascinated by the idea of cycling bread through the toaster, which the family had. A half-loaf of toast was stacked on the counter when Danielle entered the kitchen. Her daughter bragged, “I am a very good baker!”

A curious girl being able to make toast out of bread is not a miracle. But when Jesus used a boy’s five loaves and two fish to feed a crowd of 5,000, the people knew that it was a miracle and demanded that He be made king (see John 6:1–15).

Jesus slipped away because His kingdom was not of this world (John 18:36). The next day, as the crowd met Him, He saw a weakness in their intentions: they were looking for food (6:26). They believed in error that “King” Jesus would give them a full stomach and freedom from oppression in their homeland. However, Jesus advised them to work for food that endures to eternal life rather than food that perishes (v. 27).

If we have an earthly perspective, we will consider Jesus as a means to an end. He truly is our source of eternal life.

🙏🏻 Lord Jesus, may we see You as our very food and not only as our divine problem-solver.
