EXODUS 20:3; 2 KINGS 23:12–14, 21–25
As he waited for his baptism in Togo’s Mono River, Kondi stooped to pick up an aged wooden carving. His family has been worshipping this object for generations. They watched as he flung the hideous figure into the fire. Their prized hens would no longer be sacrificed to this god.
In Togo, idol burning during baptism symbolises allegiance to the true God.
King Josiah, a young king in an idol-worshipping, sex-obsessed culture, was introduced to the book of the law by the high priest, leading to his destruction of pagan altars, the burning of Asherah items, and the prohibition of prostitution.
We chase a false god whenever we actively or unconsciously search for solutions other than God. It might be wise to examine ourselves: What symbolic or real idols do we need to destroy?
🙏Lord, forgive us for following things that indicate our hearts are not centred on You. Give us a picture of what we should give up so that Your Holy Spirit might take His place.
