MATTHEW 1:18-25
Happy New Year once again!
We find ourselves in the period leading up to Christmas, known as Advent. Our hearts and minds are prepared for Christmas, which commemorates the birth of the Lord during the Advent season.
Joseph’s significance in the Christmas narrative eluded me for most of my life. He made up his mind to spare Mary any embarrassment or punishment for what appeared to be infidelity before he even knew how she got pregnant.
He was humble and obedient since he not only followed the angel’s instructions but also delayed having physical intimacy with Mary until after Jesus was born. Joseph later agreed to leave his home in order to keep Jesus safe.
The pressure Joseph and Mary must have experienced upon learning that Jesus would be theirs to raise and take care of is hard to fathom. Imagine the difficulty and strain of always being called to holiness by the presence of the Son of God; this is what it would be like to live with Him every day. What a strong man Joseph had to be for God to give him this responsibility! What a wonderful example he set for us to follow, whether we are raising our own children or those who were born to other people and are now in our care.
Despite the fact that we may not fully comprehend God’s plan, may God give us the courage to be faithful like Joseph.
