HUMAN CHESS

1 JOHN 4:7-12

Chess is an ancient strategy game. Over time, it has assumed several forms. One of them is human chess, which Charles Martel, duke of Austrasia, invented in the year 735. He would use actual humans as the game pieces and play it on enormous boards. The human pieces were dressed in accordance with their position on the board and were subject to the whims of the players, who used them to further their own objectives.

Is it possible that we occasionally play this chess version for humans? Our desire to achieve our objectives might easily push us to the point where we treat others as merely another pawn in our game. But the Bible urges us to have a different perspective on the people who surround us. We should view individuals as having been made in God’s image (Genesis 1:26). According to John 3:16, they are worthy of our love as well as God’s, who loves them.

We must love God and those He has created.

🙏Lord Jesus, help us to love people, not use them.
