HONOURABLES

ROMANS 12:10B

Paul’s second command in Romans 12:10 urges us to compete, in a sense. We are told to outdo one another in showing honour to each other. If each of us acted on this, every person in the body of Christ would always feel deeply appreciated by others. We would be motivated to continue asking, “How can I show more honour than he (she) showed to me?”

Sometimes we look at people as irrelevant or less important. We have little or no time for the elderly, no interest in what they have to offer or what they have accomplished. They had their day in the past; now it is our turn. We look at people of different ethnicities similarly. We easily disregard their person, their feelings, their dreams and ambitions, and what they can contribute to the community or the church. We treat children as though they were worth less than adults, and teenagers as if they should be banished to a remote island or another planet.

The Bible encourages us to honour people, value them, and care for them. To look for the beauty and the charm that are still there in them.

From Matthew 25:40 we see that we can honour others for Jesus’ sake! People mean a lot to Him. He gave His life for them. More than that, He says that caring for and honouring them equals honouring Him!
