ZEPHANIAH 3:1–11
In 2015, former Chadian dictator Hissène Habré was tried and later convicted by an African court for human rights abuses committed during his rule. His case reminded many Africans that power does not place anyone above justice. In the same way, God holds leaders accountable for how they treat those under their care.
In Zephaniah 3:1–11, God rebukes Jerusalem’s leaders for corruption, oppression and rebellion. The princes and judges exploited the people instead of protecting them. Although judgment was coming, God still offered an opportunity for repentance and promised to preserve a humble people who would seek Him.
This passage challenges us to practise integrity wherever God has placed us. Leaders must serve with honesty and compassion, while everyone must turn from sin. God is merciful, but He expects His people to live in righteousness.
