PHILIPPIANS 2:1-5; EXODUS 38:8
Moses asked the skilled craftsman Bezalel to assist in creating the furnishings when he brought the children of Israel together to start construction on the tabernacle (Exodus 35–39). We are informed that several women were requested to donate their precious bronze mirrors in order for him to construct the bronze basin he was making (38:8). They sacrificed them to aid in creating a space where God’s presence would dwell.
Surrender our mirrors? That would be challenging for most of us. However, our reflections may cause us to focus too much on ourselves and too little on others.
We can start to watch out not only for our own interests but also for the interests of others when we are able to swiftly forget about our own faces and realise that God loves us just the way we are—in all our flaws (Philippians 2:4).
We lose ourselves in loving ourselves but find ourselves in loving others, according to Augustine. In other words, the key to happiness is not looking good; it is giving our hearts, lives, and selves away in the name of love.
