FIRST IMPRESSIONS

1 SAMUEL 16:7

Last week, someone thought I was a thief as I was out shopping, while another thought I was a hero.

An employee stopped me as I departed the supermarket, believing I was a shoplifter. He apologised and sent me on my way after discovering I was not.

A woman in the parking lot gave my sportsman’s cap a second glance. “Thank you for defending our nation!” she said, mistaking me for an ex-serviceman. She immediately turned and went away.

Both the supermarket employee and the woman inside the parking lot had made hasty judgments about me. It is all too simple to make judgments about others based on first impressions.

When Samuel was tasked with choosing the next king of Israel from among Jesse’s sons, he too made a decision based on first impressions. God picked David, who did not appear like a king, after cautioning Samuel (1 Samuel 16:7).

God can help us see individuals through His eyes because He sees things differently than we do. He searches the heart.

Often, first impressions lead to misleading conclusions.

🙏🏼 Lord, help us view through eyes of faith the people we meet each day.
