FINAL WORD

ECCLESIASTES 5:1–7

During a university philosophy class one day, a student made some provocative comments regarding the professor’s opinions. The other students were shocked when the teacher thanked him and made a different observation. Later, some students asked why he had not rebuked the student. He said, “I am practicing the discipline of not having to have the final word.”

This teacher desired to be humble in heart while reflecting his love and reverence for God. His statements make me think of another teacher—one from a long time ago, the author of the book of Ecclesiastes. He said that when we approach the Lord, we should watch our steps and go near to listen rather than being quick with our lips and hasty in our hearts, even if he was not talking about how to deal with an angry individual. By doing this, we acknowledge that God is the Almighty and that we are His created beings (Ecclesiastes 5:1-2).

Approaching God with humility can improve our attitude. We can be humbled and amazed by the Lord’s love when we consider His wisdom, power, and presence. With this posture, we too need not have the last word.

🙏We bow down in silence before You, Lord God, because we wish to honour You. Show us how to listen and how to pray.
