1 JOHN 5:1–13
The historic Battle of Waterloo is commemorated in what is now Belgium every year on June 18. Napoleon’s French army was defeated on that day in 1815 by a multinational force led by the Duke of Wellington. “To meet your Waterloo” has since evolved to signify “to be defeated by somebody who is too strong for you or by a challenge that is too difficult for you.”
Some people believe that ultimate failure in our spiritual lives is inevitable and that each of us will eventually “meet our Waterloo.” But in his letter, John challenged that negative viewpoint. He said that everyone born of God overcomes the world. Our faith, according to 1 John 5:4, is what has overcome the world.
We may experience ups and downs in life and even battles that feel like defeats, but as long as we put our faith in Christ and His strength, we will ultimately triumph.
