CONCERNING STRANGERS

DEUTERONOMY 10:12–22; LEVITICUS 19:9–10; 23:22; DEUTERONOMY 24:19–21

In Ghana, the proverb “Chop time, no friend” was a humorous expression of the scarcity of food in certain regions, highlighting the generous nature of the people who would willingly give the last of their food to strangers.

Moses instructed the Israelites to change their hearts and stop being stubborn after leaving Egypt. He also addressed Israel’s treatment of outsiders, stating that God loves the foreigners residing among them and encourages them to love those who are foreigners, as they were themselves foreigners in Egypt.

Israel was to demonstrate their identification with the great God, mighty and awesome, through their love for the poor and foreigners.

What might this little depiction of God’s nature mean for us in the present day? How can we demonstrate His love to the underprivileged and strangers in our society?
