AN INCORRECT HORSESHOE

PSALM 34:11–18

The severe Russian winter of 200 years ago was blamed for Napoleon’s loss in Russia. His horses’ use of summer horseshoes was one particular issue. These horses lost their lives when winter arrived because they slipped while pulling the supply waggons on slippery roadways. Napoleon’s 400,000-strong army was reduced to 10,000 soldiers by the breakdown of his supply network. A minor error had a terrible outcome!

A single wrong word can significantly alter someone’s career or destiny. James describes the tongue as toxic and untamable, stating that no human being can tame it (James 3:8). This issue has become more prevalent in modern times, as careless emails or social media posts can quickly go viral and cannot always be retracted.

King David emphasised the importance of respecting the Lord through our words, teaching us to avoid evil and lying (Psalm 34:11, 13). He vowed to watch his actions and maintain a bridle on his mouth (Psalm 39:1). We should do the same.

Our words have the power to build up or pull down.
