COLOSSIANS 3:22-24
Is ambition a bad thing? Is it wrong to be ambitious, to strive for excellence? It can be. The distinction between good and bad ambition is in our motivation or goal – whether it is for God’s glory or for our own.
Paul reminds us in 1 Thessalonians 4:1 that Christians should live lives that please God. For some, the desire to please Him is a complete transformation at the moment of salvation; for others, it is a series of stutter-steps and setbacks. Whether the change occurs quickly or gradually, the Christian must pursue God’s desires rather than his or her own.
We should work with sincerity of heart, fearing God, as Paul advises (Col. 3:22). We are to serve as if we are serving God in whatever we do – in the boardroom, on the docks, or wherever we work (vs.23-24).
When we work with zeal and excellence for His delight, not ours, we glorify Him and enjoy Him the most. By working for His service and the service of others, rather than for self-serving and personal gain, we show that He deserves our best.
