A VIRAL ACT OF KINDNESS

MARK 10:13-16

The world was made aware of a small act of kindness that occurred on a New York City subway. A young man dozed off on an older passenger’s shoulder with his hooded sweatshirt covering his head. “He must have had a long day,” the older guy muttered when someone else offered to wake the young rider. “All of us have been there,” he added. He then allowed the other rider to sleep on his shoulder for a large percentage of the following hour, until the older man slowly got up to go to his stop. Another traveler took a picture in the meantime and shared it on social media, where it quickly gained popularity.

The man’s kindness seems to be in line with what we all yearn for—the kindness that expresses God’s heart. Jesus exhibited this tenderness when His disciples tried to shield Him from the commotion and disruption of young children. Jesus insisted on blessing the children instead by encircling them in His arms (Mark 10:16). He asked everyone of us to do the same, to trust Him like children (vv.13-16).

Jesus assures us that we are all secure in His presence. We can rely on Him whether we are awake or asleep. He gives us a place to rest safely when we are worn out.

🙏🏻Oh, great God, help us to rest in Your goodness and greatness, in Jesus’ name. Amen.
