A LEADER WHO SERVES

1 KINGS 12:1-15; MATTHEW 20:26

In traditional African societies, leadership succession is a crucial decision, with candidates chosen based on strength, fearlessness, and sensibleness. Candidates are examined to determine their suitability for serving the people or dictating with a heavy hand. The successor must be both a leader and a servant.

Rehoboam succeeded Solomon. Rehoboam’s lack of sound judgement fulfilled his father’s worst fear (Ecclesiastes 2:19).

Rehoboam failed to seek God and responded harshly to the people’s request for more humane working conditions. The elders advised him to serve them, but he rejected their advice. His harsh response divided the kingdom and accelerated the spiritual decline of God’s people.

We need God’s wisdom for the humility to serve rather than be served in the family, the business, the church, or our neighbourhood.

🙏 Dear Lord, please give us humble servants hearts.
