JOHN 4:27-39
When Jesus glanced at the woman at the well in John 4, what did He see? He saw someone who was thirsty for acceptance and needed to know she was loved. Most importantly, He saw someone in need of something that only He could provide: a new heart.
It was no coincidence that all of the disciples went to town to buy food. They would almost certainly have tried to persuade Jesus not to speak to this woman, a Samaritan, and someone with a bad reputation.
Jesus, not one to follow protocol, took advantage of the opportunity to bless her with the truth of “living water.” He broke down barriers of old hostilities, gender bias, ethnic and racial divides in just one conversation. And she was the first of many Samaritans to acknowledge Jesus as the Messiah.
She was already implementing the idea of “sowing and reaping” that Jesus was teaching His followers when she told others about her meeting with a Man who knew everything that she ever did (John 4:35-38). Many people believed that day, and later Philip and others would preach in Samaria and bring many more people to faith in Christ.
We bless people with living water when we tell them about our own “encounter” with Jesus.
A faith that is worth possessing is also a faith that is worth sharing.
