PSALM 131
Using words like “hush” and “shhhh,” a parent gently soothes a child in an attempt to calm him or her down. These timeless and universal scenarios remind us of Psalm 131:2, as parents show their love and support for their children in the face of suffering, disappointment, or discomfort.
David wrote the psalm in response to his own experiences that troubled him. After a sincere introspection and assessment, he poured out his heart to the Lord. Like a small infant contented with being with their mother, he finds contentment in his situation. This contemplation raises issues regarding our reactions to life’s challenges.
In his words, “Thou hast made us for thyself, O Lord, and our heart is restless until it finds its rest in thee,” Augustine, a church father, beautifully expressed how the Psalmist felt in Psalm 131.
We are occasionally humbled by the changes in life. However, we can have hope and contentment because there is someone who has vowed to never abandon us. He can be fully trusted.
🙏 Father, when things change, help Your children not to be anxious but to trust You.
