ONLY A SECOND

PSALM 39:4–6

When it comes to time, scientists are very fussy. The people at Maryland’s Goddard Space Flight Centre added one extra second to the year at the end of 2016. Therefore, you were correct if you thought that year went by a little more slowly than usual.

A second gained or lost may not mean much to most of us. Scripture, however, says that our time and how we spend it matter. In 1 Corinthians 7:29, Paul reminds us that time is short. We must make the most of our limited time to carry out God’s work. In Ephesians 5:16, we are exhorted to make the best use of the time, because the days are evil.

Although we are not required to count every second like the scientists do, we are reminded of the need of managing our time well when we reflect on how short life is (Psalm 39:4).

🙏Lord, thank You for each moment You give to mankind. May each and every one strive to honour You with this gift by using their time wisely for Your honour and glory.
