PSALM 31:14-24
Around the world, people celebrate the new year in a variety of ways.
In Japan, people wear new clothes and use pine and bamboo branches, which are emblems of longevity, to adorn their homes.
Families or groups of friends gather for meals at a host’s home in Scotland, where they give gifts shortly after midnight.
Children in Greece lay their shoes by the fireplace in the hopes that St. Basil will fill them with presents.
Many people go to church on New Year’s Eve and Day, giving thanks to God for the year that has gone by and asking Him to use them to carry out His will in this hurting, tormented world in the coming year.
God controls the seasons, the years, and even this new year (Psalm 31:15). As Christians, we should not be afraid because God is good (v. 19). Together with the psalmist, we can walk with Christ every day and declare our trust in Him (v.14).
