SURVIVING THE WILDERNESS

EXODUS 17:1–7

In the 1960s, the Kingston Trio released a song called “Desert Pete,” which tells the story of a thirsty cowboy who finds a hand pump with a note instructing him not to drink the water in the jar but to use its contents to prime the pump. The cowboy obeys, receiving an abundance of cold, satisfying water as a reward.

The text reflects on Israel’s journey through the wilderness, where Moses sought the Lord, obeyed Him, and struck the rock of Horeb, resulting in water flowing from the stone. However, Israel did not consistently follow Moses’s example of faith, and the message they heard was of no value to them.

Life can appear to be an arid desert at times. But even in the most impossible situations, God is able to quench our spiritual thirst. We can encounter streams of flowing water and grace for all of our everyday needs when we, by faith, accept the promises made in God’s Word.

🙏Lord, please help us to put our trust in You. Our hearts yearn for you. You are everything.
