Thomas Barnado, a medical missionary, entered London Hospital Medical School in 1865 with the dream of becoming a medical missionary in China. He discovered a need in his own neighbourhood and developed homes for destitute children. Barnado saved 60,000 boys and girls from poverty and early death, earning him the nickname “the patron saint of street kids” by theologian and pastor John Stott.
Jesus encouraged children to come to Him, stating that the Kingdom of Heaven belongs to those like these children. This statement surprised the crowds and disciples, as children in ancient times were often relegated to the margins of life, yet Jesus welcomed, blessed, and valued them.
James, a New Testament writer, emphasised the importance of caring for orphans (James 1:27). Today, children of all social strata, ethnicities, and family environments face risks due to neglect, human trafficking, abuse, and drugs. To honour the Father, we must show His care for these children Jesus welcomes.
