Hollywood musicals during the 1950s and 1960s were popular, with Audrey Hepburn, Natalie Wood, and Deborah Kerr delivering compelling performances. Their singing was a significant part of their appeal. Marni Nixon dubbed the voices for these leading ladies, but for a long time went uncredited for her vital contribution.
Within the body of Christ, there are frequently others who obediently stand behind those who assume more prominent roles. It was just this kind of individual who the apostle Paul relied upon during his time in ministry. Paul’s strong written voice originated from Tertius’s scribeship (Romans 16:22). Paul and the early church relied heavily on Epaphras’s unwavering intercession behind closed doors (Colossians 4:12–13). When the weary apostle required rehabilitation, Lydia graciously extended her home (Acts 16:15). Without the assistance of these fellow servants in Christ, Paul’s ministry would not have been possible (Colossians 4:7–18).
We may not always have highly visible roles, but God is pleased when we obediently play our essential part in His plan. By fully giving ourselves to the work of the Lord (1 Corinthians 15:58), we bring glory to God and draw others to Him.
