JOHN 11:1–16; JOHN 20:25
Though the name Doubting Thomas is most familiar to us (see John 20:24–29), it is not quite accurate. Ultimately, how many of us would have thought that our leader, who was executed, had been raised from the dead? We may as well give him the nickname “Courageous Thomas.” After all, Thomas showed remarkable bravery as Jesus purposefully entered the events that would result in His death.
Jesus, after Lazarus’ death, instructed his disciples to return to Judea. The disciples questioned why Jesus was returning after the Jews tried to stone him, while Thomas urged them to join him in dying, which sounded more like a sarcastic statement.
Thomas, despite witnessing Lazarus’ resurrection, couldn’t believe that the crucified Lord had conquered death. Only after seeing the risen Lord could he declare, “My Lord and my God!” Jesus’ response assures us that those who have not seen and yet have believed are blessed.
Real doubt, like that of Thomas, searches for the light; unbelief is content with the darkness.
🙏Lord Jesus, teach us to act on what we do know about You and Your goodness, and trust You in faith for what we do not know.
