THE GIFT OF ENCOURAGEMENT

ACTS 4:32–37; 9:26–27

“If We Make It Through December,” an old song by Merle Haggard, relates the tale of a man who loses his factory job and cannot afford to buy Christmas presents for his little daughter. Even though December is meant to be a joyful month, it was not so for him.

Although discouragement is not exclusive to December or any other month, it can be more intense during festive seasons. Our pain may run deeper, but our expectations may be higher. A little motivation goes a long way.

Joseph, a Cyprus man, was an early follower of Jesus and was known as Barnabas by the apostles. He sold property and donated money to help others. Later, he brought Saul, later known as Paul, to the apostles. Barnabas defended Saul as a transformed man through Christ.

People are constantly seeking encouragement, and a timely message, phone call, or prayer can significantly strengthen their faith in Jesus.

Barnabas’ generosity and support showcase the importance of being a son or daughter of encouragement, which may be the most meaningful gift we can give to others.
