HOLDING THE CROSS

PHILIPPIANS 3:7–12

Charles Spurgeon, a prominent London preacher, established the Pastors’ College in 1856 to train Christian ministry men. Renamed Spurgeon’s College in 1923, the college’s crest features a hand grasping a cross and the Latin words, Et Teneo, Et Teneor, meaning “I hold and am held.” Spurgeon’s autobiography emphasised the college’s motto, aiming to teach every man to hold and be held by the truth, particularly the crucified truth of Christ.

Paul emphasises the importance of pursuing the goal for which Christ Jesus took hold of him in his epistle to the Philippians. He encourages His followers to share the good news of the cross with others, as Christ lives in them and they are no longer alive, as they have been crucified with Christ.

Every day, our Lord holds us in His loving arms, and we hold out His message of love to others.
