SUNDAY SCHOOL

MATTHEW 25:31-40; PROVERBS 29:7

In the year 1780, Robert Raikes was concerned about the underprivileged, illiterate children in his London neighborhood. He saw that nothing was being done to assist these children, so he decided to change that.

He paid some ladies to set up Sunday schools for them. The teachers taught the most impoverished pupils in London to read and introduced them to the Bible’s lessons, using it as their textbook. Within a short period of time, about 100 children were attending these sessions and having lunch in a secure, hygienic setting. Thousands of boys’ and girls’ lives were eventually impacted by these “Sunday schools,” as they came to be known. More than a million children attended Sunday schools in Great Britain by 1831, all thanks to one man who took poor people into consideration (Proverbs 29:7).

It is well known that Jesus has a deep concern for those who are in hardship. In Matthew 25, He advises that believers demonstrate their preparedness for the Lord’s coming by helping the hungry, the thirsty, the homeless, the naked, the ill, the imprisoned, and the naked (vv. 35–36).

We honour our compassionate Saviour by taking into account the people on God’s heart while we demonstrate that Christ is in our hearts.

🙏🏻 Awaken our hearts, Lord, to those You care about, including the poor and helpless.
