MATTHEW 27:54-28:8
The centurion served as the military leader of all the soldiers who carried out and supervised the crucifixion. The centurion and some others with him exclaimed, “Truly, this was the Son of God,” shortly after Jesus had died.
The centurion was aware that this was the unique death of a unique individual. I wonder how he reacted to Jesus’ resurrection.
One commentator reiterates a legend that this centurion later converted to Christianity and even died as a martyr for the faith. We sincerely hope the lovely tale is real.
But in the interim, as we reflect once more on the terrible death and the astounding resurrection of Jesus, the centurion’s comments serve as a reminder of what we celebrate both at Easter and year-round.
Jesus is more than just a martyr or hero.
Like the centurion, we are stunned by the truth that transforms our lives. And today, we joyfully reaffirm his words: “Truly, this was the Son of God.”
HAPPY EASTER!
