TITUS 3:1-8
Many of us get a lot of emails and texts in a regular week reminding us of events or appointments or asking us to pray for others. Those are all necessary reminders.
Paul urged Titus in his “papyrus mail” to remind the believers of specific matters (3:1). Paul’s word choice suggests that he had previously written about these topics. Yet he repeated them so that the congregation would not forget since they were so significant.
Take note of what Paul wanted them not to miss. He reminded the people to submit to authority while living under the oppressive tyranny of Rome (v.1). It was crucial to establish a reputation for compliance, doing what is right, not slandering, being calm and thoughtful, and humbleness rather than complaining. Their actions demonstrated the transformation in their lives brought about by following Christ (vv. 3–5).
How are they—and we—able to do that? We are able to dedicate ourselves to doing what is right because of the Holy Spirit that He bestowed upon us through Jesus Christ (vv. 5–6, 8). We have the tools necessary to make a positive impact on the world. Thanks to Jesus’ priceless gift of salvation. We all need to be reminded of that.
