MILK OR ORANGES?

My young son was overjoyed when I told him that a baby boy, just three months old, was coming to visit our home. He offered to share some of our food with the baby, thinking that the infant might enjoy a juicy orange from the bowl on our kitchen counter. He offered the ideas with the hospitality of a young child. When the baby got older, he might appreciate oranges, but for now, he could only drink milk, I explained.

The concept of a believer’s need for spiritual food is described in a similar way throughout the Bible. Scripture’s fundamental principles are like milk; they support and nourish young Christians (1 Peter 2:2-3). Those who are of age, however, are expected to consume solid food (Hebrews 5:14).

Like a loving parent, God desires that we develop spiritually. He is aware that it is not in our best interests to just consume spiritual milk. He encourages us to continue so we can experience the taste of real food.
