JONAH 1:1-2:2
When Jane wanted to be left alone or have her way, she devised a technique to hide from people while she was still too young to walk or crawl. She just shut her eyes. She made the assumption that anyone she could not see could not see her either. She employed this strategy in her car seat when any stranger made an attempt to introduce themselves, in her dining chair when she did not enjoy the meal, and even when her parents announced that it was time for bed.
Even though Jonah used a more sophisticated hiding technique than little Jane did, it was not any more successful. He turned away from God when He urged him to perform an act he despised. He rapidly learned, however, that God could find him everywhere. In reality, the Bible is filled with instances when God discovered individuals despite their lack of desire to be found.
Perhaps we have made an effort to hide from God, or perhaps we believe that even God cannot see us. If God can see and hear the request of a rebellious prophet in the belly of a large fish, He can see and hear us wherever we are, no matter what we have done. There is nothing to be terrified of, though. It actually provides a lot of comfort. He cares and is always present!
As long as the Lord is watching over us, we do not need to be afraid of the problems surrounding us.
