MARK 12:28-34
Americans frequently complain that their laws are needlessly complicated, and many laws have complex wording that fills dozens or even hundreds of pages. They are not alone because numerous other nations also struggle with this issue.
By pledging to veto any law longer than three pages, the late Herman Cain, who briefly held the lead for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination, drew loud applause.
In their interactions with God, the religious authorities in ancient Israel acted similarly. The laws were too complicated. Even a scholar of Moses’ law found it difficult to comprehend its core due to the growing burden of religious requirements. One of these authorities questioned Jesus about which of the Ten Commandments was more important, and Jesus said that it was loving God with all of our heart, soul, mind, and strength, as well as loving our neighbours as ourselves (Mark 12:30-31).
The burden of the law of Moses was heavy, but the burden of faith in Christ is light and easy (Matthew 11:30). God’s willingness to love and forgive us made it possible for it to be light. He has given us the ability to love Him and our neighbours.
